Audio Assessments

One of the great things about adding technology into a classroom is it allows assignments, projects, and assessments that were not a possibility to now become a reality in the classroom.  Audio is something that often times is forgotten when looking at tools to assess student learning.  However, it does have some benefits.
  1. Students can work on their skills in spoken communication
  2. It allows students that learn in different ways to showcase their learning in a way that works best for them
  3. The use of audio assessment introduces a new technology tool to students
  4. It is easy to share which allows for great communication with parents and other stakeholders
Below is an example of how audio was used in a learning setting.  Students discuss the sites and culture of Paris, France.  By using something like this, a teacher could see what students learned, what impacted them, and their favorite part of a learning experience.

  1. Alicen, great ideas for using audio in the classroom! It literally gives students a voice and that is very powerful. Sometimes we forget that this is a great tool for communicating with parents too. Thanks for the reminder!

One way we used audio last year was to create short commercials for upcoming events. This was then used on our announcements for the students and put on our website for our parents. We got quite a bit of positive feedback and the kids loved making the commercials too. Audio is a powerful tool!

  2. Alicen - Really cool project with your students! Did they use an ipad to record their voices? I have never seen sound cloud before. Also, did you give the students a criteria for this assignment?

  3. This is actually not from my class, but I found it online. I thought it was a great example of how to use audio in a class, especially for assessments. I recently took an iPad class and learned a lot. One of the major tools that was discussed was using apps where students could record through audio their their discussions, thoughts, and work. It provides another avenue for those that don't perform the best in the formats that are used currently.

  4. Hi Alicen,
Thanks for this example! I really don't do much with my students and audio so this gives me some great ideas.

  5. I've used audio in my class using Jing or just using the Audio Recorder we have installed on our school laptops. I've found that students who are uncomfortable presenting in front of class or in front of the camera do very well with an audio option.
